 Back on Track

The principal focus of this Escorted Journey, as you might reasonably infer from the title, is Ecuador’s trans-Andean railway. The track bed and ballast has, over the last five years, undergone a major overhaul, the locomotives refitted, and new rolling stock introduced. The first few days are spent in Quito and the nearby cloud forest of Mindo, then we continue southwest by train, partially hauled by steam, through the 'Avenue of the Volcanoes' to the coast at Guayaquil.

Summary of nights: 10 days, 9 nights: Quito 2; Mindo 2; Quito 1; Cotopaxi 1; Riobamba 1; Huigra 1; Guayaquil 1.

  • Spend 4 days on the Tren Crucero railway as it passes by age old villages and Andean landscapes.
  • Quito –historic capital in a dramatic high-altitude mountain setting.
  • Stay in the shadow of Cotopaxi, one of South America's most iconic volcanoes.
  • Visit Mindo cloud forest, a bird spotters paradise with a stay in a relaxing lodge.
